Napier Golf Club

The Napier Golf Club “Waiohiki” is the oldest Golf Club in Hawke’s Bay. Opening in 1896 the course has been the site of many New Zealand and inter-provincial tournaments, hosting the first New Zealand Open in 1907.  Located at Awatoto on the Hawke’s Bay coastline, the course sits on land reclaimed after the 1931 earthquake, creating a uniquely flat yet character-filled landscape that rewards thoughtful play and precise execution.

One of the course’s key strengths is its variety and balance. Tree-lined fairways frame each hole clearly, encouraging thoughtful tee-shot placement rather than sheer power. While fairways are generally generous, the positioning of trees and subtle fairway contours influence ideal angles into the greens. For visiting golfers, this creates a strategic challenge that remains engaging across multiple rounds, with different lines and tactics revealing themselves over time.

The greens at Napier Golf Club are a standout feature. Typically, smooth and true, they are thoughtfully contoured to reward well-judged approach shots while remaining fair for golfers of all abilities. Approaching from the correct side of the fairway is often critical, as greens are protected by slopes, bunkers and closely mown surrounds. Missed approaches require touch and creativity, reinforcing the importance of a strong short game.

Bunkering throughout the course is understated yet effective. Rather than overwhelming the visual landscape, bunkers are positioned to shape decision-making and protect key landing zones. Greenside bunkers are well-placed to challenge aggressive approaches, while fairway bunkers subtly define preferred lines of play. This restrained approach enhances the course’s traditional character and strategic clarity.

Another strength of the layout is its rhythm and flow. The routing moves smoothly across three parts of the property with multiple road crossings.   The course has a well-considered mix of par threes, fours and fives that sustain interest from the opening hole to the final green. Par threes provide variety in length and direction, testing both precision and club selection, while par fives offer realistic scoring opportunities for those who manage risk effectively.

The setting adds to the overall appeal. Mature trees, open skies and views toward the surrounding hills create a calm and pleasant environment, allowing golfers to focus on the quality of play rather than extreme conditions. The course’s sheltered nature also makes it highly playable year-round.

For visiting golfers, Napier Golf Club delivers a well-rounded, strategic and enjoyable golf experience that highlights the strengths of classic course design and provides a relaxed yet rewarding round close to the heart of the Hawke’s Bay.
