Windross Farm is an exceptional inland links course, just 30 minutes south of Auckland. Brett Thomson of RBT Design, was engaged to lead the transformation development of the course which opened in September of 2017 following on from the closure of Manukau Golf Club. Thomson is well respected across the country, and his work speaks for itself.
He helped John Darby design Jack's Point and The Hills, before moving to work under his own banner. Former PGA Tour winner and Kiwi golf legend Phil Tataurangi joined Thomson in a consulting role and what they have created at Windross Farm is something special.
A defining strength of Windross Farm is the way it uses its expansive rural setting. Rolling terrain, broad valleys and elevated ridge lines create a sense of scale rarely found so close to a major city. From the tee, golfers are often presented with generous landing areas that invite confident driving, yet optimal positioning is essential to access the best angles into the greens. This strategic tension between freedom and precision is central to the course’s appeal.
The bunkering is both bold and purposeful. Large, sculpted bunkers frame fairways and guard greens, visually guiding players while demanding respect. They are positioned to influence decision-making rather than simply punish inaccuracy, particularly on approach shots where choosing the correct line is critical. Water hazards are used selectively, adding drama and risk without overwhelming the natural character of the course.
Windross Farm’s greens are among its greatest assets. They are expansive, fast and beautifully contoured, rewarding precise iron play and creative putting. Subtle slopes and distinct sections mean that distance control and accuracy are paramount, especially when pins are tucked. Approaches that miss the correct area of the green often leave challenging putts or delicate recovery shots, ensuring that strong scoring requires consistent execution.
The routing offers excellent variety and flow. Long, demanding par fours are balanced by shorter holes that tempt aggressive play, while the par fives present genuine risk-and-reward opportunities. The par threes are particularly memorable, each requiring a different shot shape, trajectory and level of commitment. Elevation changes are used intelligently, enhancing both the visual drama and the strategic challenge of the course.
Conditioning is another standout strength. Fairways are consistently presented, greens roll true, and the course is maintained to a standard that reflects its reputation as a top-tier destination. For international golfers, this level of presentation reinforces the sense of playing a premium championship layout.
Overall, Windross Farm Golf Course delivers a refined, strategic and visually impressive golfing experience. Its combination of modern design, natural landscape and high-quality conditioning makes it a compelling Auckland-area destination for international golfers seeking a world-class round.
