The Hills Golf Club

“The Hills” is where your golf comes alive. It boasts a stunning location with a world class golf course that also features amazing sculptural art work located around the course.

This ultra-private golf course is located in Arrowtown, only twenty minutes from Queenstown. Over the last 20-years, the course has repeatedly hosted or co-hosted the New Zealand Open tournaments.  It has received global recognition and is loved by tour players from all around the world.

Standing on the first tee, you get a panoramic view of lakes Hayes and across the golf course. The course is spread out across a glacial valley and the layout highlights the dramatic elevation changes and rocky schist outcrops that are a feature of the area. Travelling off every green, you will head to the next elevated tee which makes for longer tee shots but also allows the golfer to take in the panoramic views around them.   The course incorporates fallow areas planted with native tussocks yet the greens are still relatively accommodating to incoming shots.

Many of the greens are raised, so you need to be accurate with your approach shots. Whether it is the table-top 5th green, the 9th green sitting on a ledge or the 10th green up in a bowl, you will have to be quite precise.  The 18th Tee sets you up with a spectacular view and challenges you to hit the perfect drive!   You need to hit on the correct line and with the right amount of distance to be in the perfect position to set you up for a simpler second shot. Anything short and to the right will be gathered by one of the hardest bunkers you will ever try to escape from.  There is nothing easy about the green, and on top of that, you will be in full view of everyone in the clubhouse!

The clubhouse is another highlight. It has won national architecture awards, and its low-profile form ensures that it seems part of the natural landscape rather than imposed upon it. The views, interior design and the hospitality are all top class!

One of the outstanding features of the course is how the artwork becomes such a feature of the holes and scenery.  Whether is the dragonflies buzzing across the pond by the 6th Hole, the Clydesdale horses on the 7th Hole or the wolves to the right of the 18th Fairway; the art really adds to the ambience at The Hills.

Acknowledging that this golf course is exclusive and that the ability to access it can be challenging, if you are ever invited to play, you will definitely want to take up the opportunity. The Hills isn’t just worth playing, it is majestic in every way!
