The Titirangi Golf Club is the highest rated golf course in Auckland city and can be reached within 20 minutes by care from downtown or from the airport. Golfers from all over the world enjoy playing the course as it is a great blend of golf and New Zealand nature. The course blends heritage, beauty, and is a real strategic challenge. It was designed in 1927 by the legendary, Dr. Alister MacKenzie, and is the only “MacKenzie” course in New Zealand. The architectural design makes it as testing today as it was 100 years ago.
The name Titirangi means “fringe of heaven,” and many players feel it lives up to that image. But what many golfers love about the course is its architecture. There are narrow fairways tucked between native bush, bold bunkering in the perfect location, sloping fairways that can make those second shots even more testing, and greens with subtle and dramatic undulations. Despite not being excessively long, the course demands precision. There are blind tee shots, doglegs, and green complexes that punish loose approach shots.
The course is not an easy walk but it is very playable for golfers of all levels. Playing off the right set of tees will make some of those tee shots across deep gullies a little easier. The four par 3’s are probably the best naturally designed par 3 holes on any18-hole golf course around the world. Each faces a different direction, so wind plays differently on each, and many have multi-tiered, well-protected greens. Even the short par 4’s are challenging and require a perfectly placed tee shot and a precise second shot. When you have a challenging par 5 in the middle of the’ back 9’ called the “Wrecker”, you know it is going to be a hole requiring three excellent shots!
Titirangi has been the home of some of New Zealand’s best professional and amateur golf tournaments. The course is always in very good condition, with fairways where the ball sits up and the greens run fast. But more importantly, the course is one that you will enjoy playing and find very hard to forget. Just remember, when heading back to the clubhouse, to make sure you take an extra club or two for the elevated shot that you need to play.
