Hamilton Golf Club

Hamilton Golf Club, located in the leafy St Andrews suburb of northern Hamilton, was originally known as a classic New Zealand parkland golfing experience with a rich history and challenging layout. Established in 1903 and settled at its current location in 1913, the club has long been a cornerstone of the Waikato golf scene, blending tradition with top-tier course conditioning.

Today, the St Andrews course is an undulating links course playing harder and faster than a typical parkland layout.  Do not fear, there are over 50 different varieties – a good mix of native and introduced species so there is an abundance of local bird life and yes on many of the holes an errant golf shot will be caught by the branches.  In recent years, the course design has been tweaked to improve playability and maintenance demands.  Some of the famously feared bunkers have been reshaped or replaced with mown swales, and some trees have been removed and a few tees stretched back. This major redevelopment project, in association with the Greg Turner Design, was completed in2023.

Today, the course is a par-72 layout that stretches along the scenic Waikato River. Its design emphasizes precision and strategy over sheer distance.  A relatively flat golf course with tree-lined fairways, well-placed bunkers, and subtle elevation changes, make every shot count. Signature holes, such as the495-yard 4th Hole, dog-legs toward the river, demanding precision play onto the green to avoid watery hazards; while the uphill 165-yard par-3, 18thHole, framed by a large bunker and out-of-bounds to the right, offers a memorable finishing challenge.  This is especially true if there are a few golfers sitting out on the clubhouse patio!

Playing Hamilton Golf Club is about more than just navigating hazards; it is about thoughtful shot-making.  The course rewards accuracy and strategic play, with greens that are well-guarded yet receptive to skillful approaches.  Wind conditions near the river add a subtle test, ensuring that even experienced golfers remain engaged throughout their round.

The golf course is a true test and the club has hosted all of New Zealand’s major golfing events including recent Amateur championships.  Located close to the city centre, it is easy to stop and play this golf course.  Everyone is friendly and the surroundings and ambience with trees and river make it a lovely place to tee it up.
