Wanaka Golf Club

Wanaka Golf Club is one of New Zealand’s most scenic golfing experiences, blending natural beauty with a well-maintained and enjoyable course. Nestled above the township of Wānaka, the course offers panoramic views of Lake Wānaka, the surrounding Southern Alps, and Mount Aspiring National Park. Few courses in the country can match the sheer drama ofthis landscape, making every round as visually rewarding as it is challenging.

The course was established in 1922 down in the common. It then moved up the hill in the 1930’s extending to Faulks Terrace and Stone Street then in 1967 nine holes were established across the road in Wanaka Station.

The club boasts two nine-hole layouts – the “Upper” and “Lower” courses – which can be combined for a full 18-hole round. Both offer a balanced mix of tree-lined fairways, rolling terrain, and elevation changes that test golfers of all abilities. The Upper course in particular provides spectacular elevated tees where your drives seem to soar forever against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks. The Lower course, with more subtle undulations and tighter fairways, rewards accuracy and thoughtful shot-making.

Course conditioning is consistently high, with smooth greens and well-kept fairways that reflect the pride of the local club. While not the longest course in New Zealand, its strategic layout ensures golfers need to think carefully about club selection, especially when swirling alpine winds come into play.

Beyond the golf, the club has a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Visitors are made to feel at home, and the clubhouse offers a relaxed spot to enjoy a meal or drink while taking in the views. With its central location, it’s also easily accessible from Queenstown, Cromwell, and other Central Otago destinations.

You should play Wanaka Golf Club not only for the quality of its golf but for the unique combination of sport and scenery. It’s a course that lingers in the memory, where many of the holes are visually wonderful.  The Wanaka Golf Club is the perfect blend of challenge, beauty, and true Kiwi hospitality.
