Cromwell Golf Club: A True Inland Links in the Heart of Central Otago

Cromwell Golf Club is one of Central Otago’s quiet achievers a course that surprises, challenges and rewards in equal measure. Remarkably, it is New Zealand’s most inland golf course, yet it plays like a genuine links-style layout, shaped by wind, firm turf and strategic intent rather than sheer length.

Established in 1903 and thoughtfully redesigned in 2009 by Turner MacPherson Golf Design, the course is carved through sandy terrain, marram grass and pockets of mature trees. This natural canvas gives Cromwell its distinctive character, with rolling fairways and undulating greens that can be deceptively demanding. Shot placement matters here, and the greens often firm and subtly contoured are capable of testing even the most confident putter.

Sitting in the heart of Central Otago, the course reflects its environment. Conditions are typically dry, resulting in hard and fast fairways that encourage creativity and reward golfers who are comfortable playing the ball along the ground. When the Central Otago breezes arrive, the links influence becomes even more apparent. Club selection, patience and imagination are key, with the layout rewarding both cautious strategy and well-timed aggression.

Cromwell Golf Club offers five sets of tees, ranging from beginner to championship level, making it an enjoyable and manageable walk for golfers of all abilities. While the course is first and foremost a members’ club, visitors are warmly welcomed, adding to its relaxed and genuine appeal.

More than just a test of skill, Cromwell is a course defined by variety and visual drama. No two holes feel the same, and the ever-present scenery provides a fitting backdrop to the challenge. With some of New Zealand’s finest wineries just minutes away, Cromwell Golf Club is well worth a visit whether golf is the main reason for stopping, or simply the perfect addition to a Central Otago escape.
