Situated just a few minutes from Invercargill city, Invercargill Golf Club (often called Otatara Links) is one of the gems of Southland golf. Established in the early 1900’s, this championship-quality 18-hole course manages to combine history, natural beauty, and a test that appeals to a broad spectrum of golfers. The golf course is of a calibre that it often hosts some of NZ Golf’s leading amateur events.
What makes the course memorable is its layout and setting as it flows around the property. Built on natural links land, it features gently undulating terrain, tree-lined fairways, and sandy soil that aids drainage and firmness so your shots get a little more bounce and roll than expected. You rarely get a bad lie on the fairway due to extensive grass cover. The green complexes and bunkering are well placed and strategic, so you need to make sure your approach shots are on target. The short thick, rough and hazard placements add bite to the more challenging tees.
The course has some outstanding native bush and trees around many holes adding beauty and challenge; it is a beautiful place to enjoy a round of golf. There are multiple tee positions which help make the course more forgiving. There’s also enough variety in hole length, direction, and design so it never feels repetitive. This membership-focused course really can be challenging yet still very enjoyable to play.
