Royal Wellington Golf Club is a journey into the very heart of New Zealand golf heritage. Situated just 25 minutes from central Wellington in the tranquil Hutt Valley, the club combines historic prestige with contemporary championship design, delivering one of the country’s most refined golfing experiences. The granting of “Royal” status in 2004 — the first golf club in New Zealand to receive the honour — cemented its place among the nation’s most distinguished clubs.
Founded in 1895 and established on its current Heretaunga site by 1908, Royal Wellington has evolved into one of New Zealand’s premier private parkland courses. The club underwent a significant redevelopment in 2012, with Greg Turner and Scott MacPherson redesigning the Heretaunga Course to make full use of the natural river terraces, waterways, and mature tree-lined landscape. Reopened in 2013, the par-72 course is now widely regarded as one of the finest parkland layouts in Australasia.
Set among ancient riverbeds, native podocarp forests, and the meandering Hutt River, the course blends natural beauty with strategic challenge. Water is a constant feature throughout the round, with the Māwaihākona Stream and several lakes influencing both aesthetics and shot-making decisions. The signature par-5 4th hole perfectly captures this character, with its split fairway requiring a bold tactical choice and a lake protecting the approach into the green. The demanding par-3 8th tests precision with water and severe contours, while the closing par-5 18th provides a dramatic finish back toward the stately clubhouse.
With five sets of tees, the Heretaunga Course offers strategic variety for golfers of all levels, challenging elite players while remaining enjoyable and accessible for visitors. The course has hosted seven New Zealand Opens along with some of the region’s most prestigious amateur championships, including the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, the New Zealand Men’s and Women’s Amateur, the Annika Invitational, and the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship. These events have showcased Royal Wellington to a global audience and reinforced its standing as a world-class venue.
Beyond the golf itself, Royal Wellington delivers an experience steeped in tradition and hospitality. The elegant clubhouse, mature avenues of trees, and classic parkland setting evoke the atmosphere of a distinguished British golf club. After the round, the clubhouse provides a warm and sophisticated setting to enjoy a meal or drink overlooking the closing holes.
The club also features outstanding practice facilities, including a comprehensive driving range and short-game areas, while the charming 9-hole Terrace Course offers a more relaxed golfing option. Whether drawn by its championship pedigree, its rich history, or its serene setting beneath the surrounding hills, Royal Wellington offers a memorable golfing experience that effortlessly combines tradition, beauty, and modern course design. For anyone visiting the Wellington region, it remains an absolute must-play destination.
