The Arrowtown Golf Club has established a golf course that is widely regarded as one of the finest country courses in New Zealand. The club's early origins date back to 1911, when a six-hole course was constructed just beyond the Arrowtown Borough boundary. The new club was formed in 1935, and the development of the original 9-hole coursewas a laborious process, carried out with rakes, wheelbarrows, and hand mowers, with its maintenance ultimately falling to the members.
Today the 18-hole golf course is now recognized as one of the most picturesque in the country. The course is special with how strongly landscape and history are woven into the golf. The Remarkables and other mountain ranges frame nearly every vista. The ruins of historic stone cottages (notably Shanahan’s Cottage along the 2nd hole) add character; painting a sense of place and history getting under your skin as you walk the course. There’s a ruggedness to parts of the terrain—rock outcrops, dry mounds, sometimes parched fairways—but the experience feels genuine, not overly manufactured
Off the tee you frequently need to thread shots between rocky outcrops, trees or edges defined by natural terrain. The par-3s are especially memorable as they often require clubbing over slopes or hollows, with risk of misjudged approach punishments if you stray.
Although not a long golf course it does have a premium placed on straight driving and many of the holes have challenging small greens but over the 18-holes every club in your bag will be tested. The course is extremely playable for golfers of all abilities with a clubhouse that is welcoming to enjoy a beverage or two after golf.
