Golfing legend Sir Bob Charles and course developer John Darby dreamed of an immaculately challenging golf course. A course to delight players and test the world’s best and which Christchurch, and New Zealand, could be proud. Since opening in 2002 Clearwater has hosted prestigious championships, including eight NZPGA Championships, two New Zealand Men’s Opens and four New Zealand Women’s Opens.
From the five championship tees (and three women’s tees), the par-72 layout stretches out to ~6,526 metres from the back tees. The course is flat and spread out with some wide spaces for the errant shot especially when wind blows but the golfer can take some risk reward playing lines to shorten the shots playing into the green. The last four holes ensures that you must be on top of your game right through to the finish of your round.
Built as part of a real estate and hotel development the golf course has property overlooking the course on most hosts but the golf course as a series of spring-fed lakes and trout-filled streams, offering uninterrupted views of the Southern Alps. Notable holes include the par-3 ninth, requiring a full water carry, and the par-5 fourteenth, featuring two water crossings and a challenging split green. Next to the golf course is the Isaac Conservation Park now links Clearwater Resort and Coutts Island recreation park. A network of walking and cycling tracks provide recreation opportunities across the entire area.
