Kinloch

The Kinloch Club near Lake Taupō is widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s premier golf experiences.  The course is New Zealand’s only one of two Jack Nicklaus-designed, 18-hole signature course which opened in 2007. The matches bold design, outstanding scenery, and great conditioning to create a course that is testing, beautiful and fun to play.

Nestled in rolling farmland above Lake Taupō, the course offers sweeping panoramic views of the lake and surrounding volcanic ranges especially from the 10th tee.  The elevation changes are frequent and meaningful, with tee boxes perched over fairways and greens that take advantage of the natural contours.  The par 3’s are extremely challenging especially when the wind is coming off the lake.

The layout, will test all golfers and every club in the bag.  Yes, the course is New Zealand’s hardest golf course off the back and anyone that plays to their handicap has played extremely well.  The multiple tee positions allow all golfers enjoy the course but it is a course where managing your next shot is vital.  Precision off the tee is often rewarded and unfortunately your mis-executed shots well be punished.

The greens have lots of undulation and are known to be fast and true but being on the wrong section to the pin will often lead to a three putt.  The bunkering is deep and well placed and blend in with the terrain.  Hole designs are varied: some uphill, some downhill; some offering dramatic views; others relying more on subtle strategy.  The front nine is very much the inland 9 and the back 9 is the more exposed and open lake view part of the course.

With the course being built on pumice soils, drainage is excellent, helping to maintain fairway firmness, green speed, and overall playability even in wetter seasons.  Playing conservatively will ensure you have a great day.  The overall surroundings and rustic little clubhouse make this a memorable golfing experience.
