New Plymouth Golf Club

Known by the locals as Ngamotu Links, New Plymouth Golf Club, is Taranaki’s top golf course.  Located just outside New Plymouth at Bell Block, it is a par-72 championship layout that delivers on challenge, character, and scenery.  The golf club has hosted four New Zealand Open Championships as well as a variety of national and provincial competitions.

The course was cleverly designed with both nines making big loops from the clubhouse. This means that whatever the wind direction, you’ll find holes where the breeze plays for you, and where it works against you.  Standing on the first tee, you really get the feeling of everything you will face… a lovely layout with undulation and tree-lined fairways coupled with great vistas of Mt Taranaki and the Tasman Sea.

There are four par-3’s that are often singled out as among the best in New Zealand. They differ in direction, length and character, and keep you honest and reward good shot-making.  Water comes into play on several holes, the bunkering is strategic, and many greens are fairly contoured so tidy approach shots and good putting are rewarded.

The par four 13th is the best hole on the course. Standing on that elevated tee, watching the sets of surf roll in along that endless coastline, it is one of the unique experiences in golf in New Zealand. It’s a beautiful par four that measures 315m from the whites. South African legend Bobby Locke once called the 13th "among the eighteen finest".

The next hole is just as good and can play so different depending on the wind conditions. The par 3 14th is only 116m but it can be anything from a pitching wedge to a three iron, maybe more. Standing on that green you will enjoy the ocean lapping onto the black sand beach.

If you like golf that mixes a test with beauty, where every hole gives something a bit different, and with one of the best backdrops in New Zealand, Ngāmotu Links is a must-play!
