Everything about Kauri Cliffs is simply outstanding. Yes, it is worth the effort to make the trip from Auckland up to the Rosewood Kauri Cliffs, it is one of the world’s finest luxury golf resorts and the course offers an unparalleled golfing experience and outstanding accommodation. A round at Kauri Cliff isn’t just about score — it’s about the experience: the views, the fresh air, the sound of waves, perched greens, and the feeling that you’re closer to what golf can, at its best, be.
Designed by David Harman (with later input by Rees Jones) and perched above the Pacific Ocean at Matauri Bay in Northland the course is rated in the world’s Top 100 and deservedly so. Everyone who plays Kauri Cliffs is in total awe from the moment you hit the driving range and putting green with the vistas, the amenities and the quality of golf! With a limited number of golfers gracing its fairways on any given day it’s easy to get the feel that you’re the only person enjoying the privilege.
The opening three holes warm you up nicely before the real challenge begins. Golfers are faced with elevation changes, hitting across caverns and deep gorges, playing off ridges with wind exposure, and lots of strategic risk-reward moments making club selection, shot shaping, and course management really important.
The back nine showcases four inland holes that wind through marsh, forest and farmland before you hit the homeward stretch (14th hole) and play across the top of the bay and back up to the clubhouse. The 17th, a par-4 slight dogleg-left, is regarded as one of the best holes in New Zealand.
With the variety of tee options and course layout ensures that golfers of all levels will have a great time playing the course. The fairways are pure to playoff and the greens roll consistently well especially across the exposed greens.
When you finish you will enjoy the view from the clubhouse balcony which arguably is one of the most majestic in world golf.
Kauri Cliffs is more than just a golf course; it’s a destination and worth the trip. For serious golfers who appreciate natural beauty, architectural nuance, and luxury hospitality, it ranks among the very best. It’s especially appealing for those looking for golf that rewards patience, precision and respect for the land.
